Knowing how to get the best exchange rate and transferring
money to Spain at the lowest cost is very important if you are buying a
Spanish property. The process involves
exchanging UK Sterling or US Dollars into Euros and transferring this to a
Spanish Bank Account.
There are three factors that affect the amount of actual cash you
will end up with in Spain after transferring money into Euros:
1. The exchange rate you receive from your bank or money exchange
company.
2. The transfer charge that is made by your bank or exchange company
to send the money to Spain.
3. The charge made by your Spanish bank for receiving your money and
opening an account.
Money Transfer companies only deal in buying and selling foreign currencies, and because they buy such huge sums they
get their Euros at an exceptionally good rate.
They then sell the Euros to
their clients (you) at a rate higher than the price at which they
purchased them (this is how they make their profits) - but at an
exchange rate much better than from a normal high-street bank.

Most English banks and Money Transfer companies make a charge
for transferring your money to a Spanish account. Charges
between banks vary dramatically and can range from £20 up to £70 for
each transaction, depending on how quickly the money must be
transferred. Transfer through a bank can take up to six days - but this
is not always guaranteed - even when paying a higher rate.
Money Transfer Companies offer faster money transfer services. And
transfer charges are usually £15 or £25 - some companies make no charge at all.
Discussing your money transaction with a Transfer Company will enable you to
negotiate the very best rate.
